How to Install Your Toyota Mirror (Side View or Driver's Side)
While Toyota model cars are stylish and reliable by default, they're not impervious to damage and accidents such as a collision that could smash your side mirror to bits. In fact, the side view mirror is probably the most likely mirror to get damaged because of its external placement and vulnerability. With that said, you don't need to buy expensive parts and labor to reinstall your side view mirror. You can actually install the mirror by yourself. Like with busted headlights, there are laws that prohibit motorists from driving around with a busted side view mirror.
What You'll Need
- Flathead screwdriver
- Phillips screwdriver
- Telescopic magnet
- Spare mirror
Step 1:When replacing your side view mirror, you should roll the window down all the way so that you won't end up scratching or smashing it as you attempt to remove the car part. This also gives you a bit of elbow room to work with.
Step 2:Search for the triangular interior mirror molding or trim panel in the upper left corner of your open window (it's inside the door next to the mirror). It might be black or the same color as the interior panels.
Step 3:Use your screwdriver to pry the molding off gently. This trim is snap-in-place, so prying it off is enough to remove it. Below it is a ¼-inch lip that inserts into the cavity of the window.
Step 4:Pry the lip loose from your car door then lift the lip out of the aforementioned cavity. Locate the wire harness as well to gently pull the wire out in the door's middle hole.
Step 5:With the assistance of a screwdriver, press the lock clip to unplug the harness from the mirror wire. You'll also see three rubber foam plugs that you should remove.
Step 6:Search for the nuts inside the door cavity behind the aforementioned plugs. Take them off with your socket, extension, and ratchet. Hold a telescopic magnet alongside the socket to keep the nut from falling into the cavity.
Step 7:This is the point where you can remove the stock mirror from your door. You might need to also remove the stripping that's sealing the mirror to the door. Don't overdo it, though. Be careful so that you won't scratch the finish.
Step 8:It's at this point that you can replace your old side view mirror with a new one. Insert your new mirror into the allotted space, put on the thread, and tighten the nuts into the studs one by one.
Step 9:Insert your mirror wire back into the wire harness then tuck it back into the door cavity. Also replace the foam rubber plugs for good measure.
Step 10:Put into the window cavity the interior molding lip you removed earlier, pressing it against your door until it snaps into place altogether.
From the Toyota Camry to the Toyota Sequoia, the abovementioned steps should assist you in properly installing a new side view or driver's side replacement mirror for your driving safety needs. Take note that removal of the different fasteners, bolts, inserts, and whatnot make up the most labor-intensive parts of this installation process. If your side mirror has been compromised either by a passing grocery cart or after being stolen by criminal elements, then you should know how to replace that stock mirror with a new part.
