When was the last time you checked your vehicle's yoke? Like all parts of your vehicle, this component suffers significant damage over time because of wear and tear. When it fails in your driveshaft, it's advisable to replace the entire assembly immediately to ensure that your vehicle will work properly. As you know, yokes are essential to cars because together with splines, they allow drive shafts to move in and out and up and down. This mechanism is absolutely necessary because changing your axis means your length must also compensate. Don't be surprised though if your yoke gets damaged because it is one of the most commonly broken parts in the driveshaft system. But instead of trying to tinker with your messed up stock, replace it with a new one to solve all your problems right away. Aftermarket yokes are crafted from extremely durable materials, so once you install one, it's very unlikely that you'll have any problems with it for a long period of time. You also don't need to worry about the fit because aftermarket yokes are rigorously engineered according to OEM specs for most makes and models. How Do You Pick from the Yoke Choices for Your Ride?

The powertrain of your vehicle is a huge puzzle of integrated parts responsible for making your wheels turn round and round. If you look at it in the simplest way, the engine continually churns out power while it is aided by the transmission. This force is then delivered to the rear end via the drive shaft. The yoke is the main link of the drive shaft to the differential of your vehicle. But how do you actually pick the one appropriate for your ride. Here are some tips on how to single it out before purchasing.

Checking the compatibility and fitment of the yoke in the existing drivetrain

The first thing you should consider when looking for a yoke is the drivetrain you have in your car. This will determine if a certain yoke can be fitted and will be able to function properly once you install it. For stock applications, you will be able to easily narrow down your list by looking for those that are manufactured specifically for your car. All you have to do is find the products that are categorized under the correct year, brand, model and trim. There should be a good number of available stock for modern cars.

However, if you are dealing with older cars and restomods, you will have to be more critical of its specifications. You should be able to determine the transmission you are using and the rear end that receives all the power. There might even be times that doing a little fabrication is needed to make your Frankenstein of a car work. If that is t he case, we recommend that you a little bit more research to ensure that you avoid any bugs once you get your car running on the streets.

Should you go for a brand new yoke or a remanufactured one?

Deciding between as brand new yoke or a remanufactured model is something like choosing between a modern car and a restored classic. There are always pros and cons that go along with it. If you are going for a brand new model, you can be assured that it has not been used yet on other assemblies. It can be a brand new start for your drivetrain. You might even be able to cross the yoke out of the list of parts that should constantly be monitored for their condition. However brand new parts from aftermarket brands might be the exact same yoke that churned out of the auto manufacturer.

On the other hand, remanufactured yokes can cost fairly lower than the brand new counterparts. These products have undergone proper rehabilitation to remove debris and other unwanted issues. However, you should also remember that this kind of part has already been used in another vehicle and might have experienced significant stress from running miles before. This issue can affect the integrity of the part. On the brighter side, this might be a better option for owners of old vehicles that have obsolete parts already. You know that finding old new stocks can sometimes be headache!

8 Easy Steps to Replacing Your Transmission Yoke

Your vehicle's transmission yoke is designed to be a mounting point for your drive shaft and seal the back of your transmission. It works with the splines to allow free movement of the drive shaft. The yoke is subjected to an enormous amount of wear and tear. When it starts to fail, you will need to replace your entire drive shaft to make sure your vehicle will run properly. Free yourself from the old yoke! It's a project you can do yourself.

            Difficulty Level: Moderate

            Here's what you'll need:

            • Wheel chocks
            • 1/2-inch drive ratchet
            • 1/2-inch drive socket set
            • Hand-held sledgehammer
            • Torque wrench
            • Replacement drive shaft assembly
            • Chalk
            • Safety glasses
            • Vehicle owner manual

Step 1: Make sure your vehicle is parked on level ground and engine has cooled over a few hours before you begin. Place the wheel chocks in front of the front wheels and behind the rear wheels.

Step 2: The yoke is at the back of the transmission that is connected to the front of your drive shaft. Slide under your vehicle and use your ratchet and a socket to loosen and remove the U-joint cap bolts holding the front drive shaft yoke to the transmission yoke.

Step 3: Your front drive shaft U-joint needs to clear the transmission yoke. To achieve this, pull back on the front drive shaft yoke. Use your hand-held sledgehammer to tap at any components that are stuck.

Step 4: Carefully remove the front part of your drive shaft and set it aside. Use your ratchet and a socket to remove the U-joint strap bolts holding the rear of your drive shaft to the rear-end yoke.

Step 5: Carefully pull the rear of your drive shaft free of the rear-end yoke. If it's stuck, tap it with your sledgehammer. Extract your old drive shaft from under your vehicle.

Step 6: Install your new drive shaft assembly. Secure the U-joint of the front part of the drive shaft to the yoke at the back of your transmission by first placing the U-joint straps onto the yoke, then screwing the strap bolts into it, and finally tightening the strap bolts with your ratchet and socket. Use your torque wrench and a socket to torque the strap bolts down to 25-30 foot-pounds (or as specified by your owner manual).

Step 7: Repeat Step 6 for the rear drive shaft yoke and the rear-end yoke.

Step 8: Remove the wheel chocks.

You may give your vehicle a test drive afterwards then check if the U-joint strap bolts are still torqued properly. This is a general guide; refer to your owner manual for specific details that may require you to do this differently.
